15 Proven Ways to Become Smarter Today

If you are like most people, then you probably want to find a way to make yourself smarter. Not that you aren’t intelligent already, but there is always room to grow, right? Well, I have good news for you! There are plenty of ways that you can give yourself more brain power, and they don’t involve going back to school full-time.

Keeping your brain active will help you in your day to day life, and it may also have benefits that last your whole life. There is research that shows people who keep stretching their mental capacities have fewer problems later in life with things like memory loss and even dementia.

To help you in your quest for adding some more smarts to your brain, I have compiled this list of 15 tips and tricks to help you become smarter.

Read a Little Bit Every Single Day

It doesn’t really matter what you are reading, the simple act of consuming information in the written form helps increase your brain power. This is most likely because it increases your analytical thought processes and improves your powers of reflection. Whether you are reading a beach novel or a heavy reference tome, you are absorbing new material and learning to think more critically.

Give Yourself a Pep Talk

It may sound a little bit silly, but simply telling yourself that you are a smart person can actually help make you smarter. Seriously. There was a study conducted by a few professors from Stanford and Columbia. Students told they were smart did better on course material than the students that were told they weren’t smart. So, when you are getting ready in the mornings, take a look at your reflection and remind yourself that you are an intelligent person who is good at learning.

Do a Deep Dive

Pick a subject that you like, and really delve into it. Doing this deep dive will give you a true understanding of the topic, and it will keep your mind active in absorbing the new information. If it is a subject you aren’t at all familiar with, start with the basics. People learn in a cumulative manner. Then as you understand the basics, add more and more complex issues to give your brain a good workout. Once you have mastered a subject, move on to another one.

Study a New Language

Learning a language can be tough, especially in adulthood. Yet, it is one of the best ways to challenge your brain. You may never reach a truly fluent level in your new language, but you will give your brain an intense workout. Learning a language is one of the best ways to increase your intelligence because it taxes your brain in a way that other learning does not.

Ask Lots of Questions

Curiosity and asking questions are extremely important for increasing your intelligence and your creativity. Asking why or how pushes the boundaries that are set up in your mind, and it forces you to explore new and different territory. Try to find insightful questions to ask about your reading material or the new subjects you are learning. When you meet someone that works or has interests that are unknown to you, ask questions to learn new experiences. Once you start this pattern of curiosity, you will find that you are constantly seeking out new knowledge in order to feed your hungry brain.

Widen Your Social Circle

Being more social will have several benefits to your brain. It will open you up to new experiences, new ways of thinking about things, and new sources of knowledge. Plus, the act of being social forces you to a higher plane of cognitive performance. The social interactions themselves can boost your intelligence, and then the benefit you get from knowing new and different people will also make you smarter.

Play Games

Not just any games will do, however. You need to play “brain games.” These are usually short or quick games that are specifically designed to help boost your IQ levels. These types of games nurture your problem-solving skills as well as your memory. While these games won’t suddenly turn you into Albert Einstein, they will give your neural pathways a workout which is never a bad thing.

Change Up Your Routine

While you don’t have to completely rearrange your schedule, you want to avoid getting stuck in a rut. Adding a little bit of spontaneity or novelty to your day can help wake up your brain. It can be something simple like changing the route you drive home or going for a walk on your lunch break; any little change that mixes up your day and eliminates the monotony. The thing to remember with this switch up is to avoid simply turning it into your new habit. The regular changes in your day will keep different parts of your brain active, and it will keep you engaged in your surroundings instead of just being on autopilot.

Have Frequent Sex

This is probably a tip that everyone will be happy to add to their to-do list. Research has shown that frequent sex can boost brain performance. In the study, the participants were asked to take a standardized test, and those that had sex on at least a weekly basis scored higher than the people who did not. More sex equals more brain power. If you're a guy that wants to attract more women in your life, I suggest you check out The T8 System.

Exercise Regularly

Just about anything you want to accomplish in your body will always lead back to regular exercise. Want to be heart healthy? Exercise. Want to lose weight? Exercise. Want a better sex life? Exercise. Want to boost your brain’s thinking power? Yep. Exercise. A regular workout schedule boosts blood flow to your brain just like it does the rest of the body which means, regular exercise makes you smarter. Personally, I like to jump and I use the Crossrope Get Lean Weighted Jump Rope Set (you may have seen me using these over on my Instagram).

Review Things You Have Learned

Any new information that you pick up is generally stored in your short term memory. If you want to retain that information for any length of time, you need to get it into your long term memory. The best way to get it there and keep it there is by reviewing it. When you are doing your deep dive or learning any new piece of information, you will want to come back to it after a few days and focus on it again. You may want to rewrite it or reread the material that you previously read, but the goal is to turn your focus to that information for a second, third, and maybe even fourth time to solidify it into your brain.

Learn an Instrument

Being musically inclined is good for your IQ. Playing an instrument on a regular basis can increase your cognitive powers a lot. The part of the brain that you use when playing the guitar (or piano, or trombone…) is the same part of the brain that controls your memory, hearing, and your motor skills. So, if you have always wanted to play an instrument, it is never too late to start. Your brain will enjoy the workout.

Eat Smarter Foods

There are certain food items that are known to be good for the brain. You are looking for things with high levels of good fats like fish or nuts to give your brain a boost. The brain is made up of about 60% fat content, and it needs to burn fat to run efficiently. Avocados are excellent brain food. So are salmon, walnuts, dark chocolate, and eggs. Even a small amount of red wine or coffee can help out with your brain’s activity levels.

Write Down Your Ideas

While you are busy working out your neural pathways and flexing your brain, you are likely to start spilling over with new ideas or questions that you want answered. This is a good time to make notes about them. Use your smartphone or a small notebook that you can keep handy, and when you have one of those great ideas or burning questions, you can record it for later. This will help you expand your knowledge base, feed your curiosity, and it could even lead to a whole new business venture. Once you wake your brain up, there is no telling where your creativity may flow.

Sniff Some Rosemary

While this may seem very random, there is research to back it up. Apparently, the scent of rosemary can boost your brain’s agility and increase your mental performance. In a study that was conducted in 2012, a group of people were given a numerical test to complete. The people completed the test more quickly and with better scores when they were exposed to the scent of rosemary.

There you have it, 15 ways to increase your brain’s power and make yourself smarter.
