12 Great First Date Ideas (That Are Fun and Don’t Cost an Arm and a Leg)
If you’ve followed my advice on how to approach a beautiful woman and how to become a more charismatic man, you have found a woman and asked her out. If things went well, she said “yes”. Now you’re stuck, though. You have to plan where you’ll take her. This is crucial – the wrong date idea and you’ll be shot down in flames. A bad first date will not get you a second date, which means you’re back to square one.
That can be tough to figure out. What do women want to do on a first date? What do they actually consider fun? And can you take her out without breaking the bank?
There’s good news. Not only is it possible to have a great first date, but you can do so without spending a fortune in the process. In this post, I’ll walk you through some of the best first date ideas that offer you and your new female friend a fun, enjoyable time at a reasonable cost.
The Type of Woman and Her Ideal First Date
Before we start discussing the ideas for a fun yet enjoyable first date, we need to say a few things. The most important thing here is that you match the type of woman to the first date idea. There is no one-size-fits-all solution here. What appeals to one woman will be a major turn off for another.
You need to infer from what you know of her from your previous meeting, your talks and texts with her, any information from her friends and the like. Based on this, you can start to determine what she likes and what she will dislike. This is absolutely critical, so don’t take shortcuts.
Hike through a Local Park
If you’re lucky enough to live near a nice park with a pond or river running through it and some well-maintained hiking trails, you have a built-in first date option that will cost nothing (or next to nothing). If you and she are both physically fit and adventurous, go for a hike. However, you might also consider going for a more sedate walk. Pack a picnic and stop for dinner along the way. It’s romantic, and will only cost you for the food.
A Community Concert
These days, quite a few communities put on concerts and other events throughout the spring and summer, and into the fall. If you live in one of these areas, going to that concert should be a no-brainer. However, make sure that you spend a little on dinner or she might think you’re being cheap (which you are, but you don’t want her to know that). Dinner first, then pack a blanket and sit on the grass under the stars and let the band serenade you both.
Take a Cooking Class
Looking for something that’s fun and relatively affordable? Consider taking a cooking class together. That will show her several things. First, it proves that you’re not a damn Neanderthal and are willing to try to cook your own food. Second, it shows her that you’re not afraid to not only try new things, but to fail in the process. Finally, you can (usually) eat your results, saving you some money and time when it comes to dinner.
Ditch Dinner for Brunch
Dinner is tired and old (and it can be really expensive). Brunch is usually none of those things. So, consider ditching dinner in favor of a Sunday brunch somewhere. Get adventurous and try somewhere new that serves great breakfast food plus has a good list of brunchtime drinks on offer. In addition to avoiding the cost of an expensive dinner, this also tells her that you’re nontraditional, and that you’re a lot of fun, as well.
Go to a Drive In Movie
Ok, this one might not be possible for everyone, but drive-ins are making a comeback, and there are more of them out there than you might think. Why go to a drive-in, rather than a regular movie? There are tons of reasons. First, you can’t really talk in a regular movie, but you can chat all you want in your own car. Second, you may be able to get out of the car, toss a blanket on the ground and recline with her (giving you a chance to get close). Plus, drive-in movies are just fun, and there’s usually decent food close at hand.
Hit Several Food Trucks
Want to do dinner out, but not sold on the conventional restaurant options? Most urban areas have a great alternative – food trucks. Today’s food trucks are gourmet restaurants on wheels that serve portable portions of whatever you might want. You’ll also find that many of them congregate in the same area, meaning that you can get one dish from truck A, another from truck B, dessert from truck C, and maybe an alcoholic (or non-alcoholic) beverage from truck D. You get the chance to eat and walk, and get to know one another without being confined to a traditional restaurant.
Do a Restaurant Tour
Ever wanted to do a multi-course meal? You can take the same concept and visit different restaurants. It’s sort of like a bar crawl, but without the focus on getting plastered. Pick three different restaurants, and have one dish at each. You could do an appetizer at one, an entrée at a second, and dessert at a third, or any other combination you might want. You can talk during the meal, and the walk from restaurant to restaurant will give you a chance to burn off some calories and get to know one another even better.
Hit a Record Store
Vinyl has made a huge comeback, and you can show her that you’re hip while you both get to know one another’s musical tastes. Of course, there’s an added advantage if you do this during summer – air conditioning.
Explore a Used Bookstore
Ok, this one isn’t for everyone, but if both you and she love to read, then there’s no better (or cheaper) first date idea than to go explore a used bookstore. You’ll enjoy the signature smell of old paper, and be able to get to know one another’s tastes and influences. Many bookstores also sell beverages and food, so you can do it all in one stop.
Sure, bowling has been around for decades, but there’s no denying the fun. It’s also super casual and it doesn’t cost a whole lot. Grab a pitcher of beer and an order of fries, and have a night of fun bowling strikes (or gutter balls – whatever works) with your lady love. You’ll laugh, have a chance to talk and get to know one another, and even see how good or bad a winner/loser you both are. Note that if she’s not very good, or has never been bowling, be a champ and get gutter bumpers so she stands a chance of doing decently. It shows that you’re not focused solely on being “the best” or on winning constantly.
Head to an Aquarium
Most urban areas these days have at least a modest aquarium, and major cities have very large ones that offer hours and hours of exploration options. This can be a lot of fun, particularly if you go during non-peak hours. You can hold hands while walking through tunnels of blue, laugh at the strange looking sea creatures staring back at you, and generally not spend a ton of money in the process. Some aquariums have eateries attached, but if not, you can add in lunch or dinner and still not break the bank.
Go to a Pub
Note that I said “pub” and not “bar”. What’s the difference, you ask? Simply put, bars are for drinking and getting loud. They’re populated by people blowing off steam, and listening to loud music. Pubs, on the other hand, are generally better suited to a quiet drink or two and good conversation. Most also serve some downright delicious food. You can even go upscale by hitting a gastropub, or you can go retro with the time-honored Irish pub.
As you can see, there are plenty of great first date ideas that offer fun and enjoyment, without a huge price tag. Use your imagination, and base your decision on what you know of her and your own interests. It also helps if you avoid these terrible first date ideas – you could go down in flames with any of the ones on that list. You’ll probably be surprised at how many commonly recommended dating ideas are on the no-go list.
