10 Ways to Improve Your Life
Sometimes, you can let life get the best of you, and you will feel like you are drowning in work, debt, your relationship, or numerous other things. You may feel like your career isn’t going anywhere or that you will never have the relationship that you deserve. All of those things can drain your physical and mental health leaving you feeling generally unhappy to downright depressed.
The first thing to remember when life is getting you down is that everyone goes through these types of emotions at some point in their life. It is normal. To get out of this slump, you will need to make a few changes which will get things back on track. While there will be numerous things in your life that you can’t do anything about, there are actually a lot more things that you have control over than you may realize.
Improving your life won’t be easy. It will take a bit of courage and a whole lot of determination. However, if you really want things to get better, you should be able to put in the effort and get the life that you truly want. Here are 10 ways to improve your life.
Look Fear in the Face
Everyone has things that they are afraid of, and oftentimes, we don’t realize how much our fears change the way we live our life. In order to conquer those fears that are keeping you from actualizing your best self, you need to look them in the face.
This is easier said than done because the majority of people may not even know what they are actually afraid of in the first place. It will require a whole lot of introspection and being truthful with yourself. Do the work to figure out what your fears truly are, and you will find a whole new lease on life.
Don’t Sacrifice the Future for the Present
We live in the era of instant gratification. Place an order on Amazon, get your package today. Want to watch a particular TV show at 2 am, stream it instantly on your laptop. Miss your mom, FaceTime her for a quick chat.
Many of the things we want, we can have at the touch of a button. Yet, there are some things that just can’t be accomplished in an instant such as getting in shape or creating a business. However, most people are constantly sabotaging their future self from reaching their goals by giving in to immediate wants. Instead of sticking to a healthy diet and getting the body that you want, you reach for a second slice of cake. Instead of putting away a portion of your paycheck, you go on a monthly shopping spree.
Most of the pleasure that is derived from these actions is fleeting, and yet, we are willing to sacrifice the future for a minor pleasure or convenience in the present. Start creating your best life by considering the future you want when making decisions in the present.
Learn Something New
Part of living a fulfilling life is having interests and hobbies. When was the last time you learned something new? Find something that you have an interest in like learning a new language or learning how to play an instrument, and then get out there and make it happen.
You will find that stretching yourself will help build up your confidence, and it will give you another interesting facet to your personality. It can also help you find new friends, and it will keep your brain active and engaged. Plus, you will get the bonus of setting aside some time each week just for your own interests.
Learn to Apologize
One of the hardest things to do is admit that you are in the wrong, but it is absolutely necessary when building relationships whether they are romantic, platonic, or even work-related. Face it, you aren’t perfect, and there will be times in your life when you screw up.
It is imperative that you learn how to recognize the times when you are at fault and craft a sincere apology. Remember, “I’m sorry.” is an entire sentence. A true apology doesn’t have a “but” in it.
Quit Making Excuses to Yourself
If you are constantly looking for a reason to not do something, you will find it every time. When you don’t want to work out or don’t want to quit smoking, you will always give yourself the loophole that gets you out of doing it.
Decide that what you want, then go after it. Don’t give yourself any leeway and don’t accept any excuses from yourself. Be firm. At first, you may find that this is rather difficult, and it may help to have a friend help hold you accountable. However, you should eventually get to the point that you can be honest with yourself and hold yourself accountable.
Oftentimes, we are our own worst critics. Right? It is so easy to beat yourself up, but if you sit back and really look at the conversations going on inside your head, you will realize that you would never be that hard on someone else. You aren’t perfect. You are never going to be perfect, and that is okay.
When you accomplish a goal, give yourself a reward. It is probably, that you accomplish plenty of goals during the course of any given week, and you should be praising yourself for those achievements the same way you would a coworker or partner.
You will always feel aimless and out of sorts within your life if you don’t know where you are going. Humans function better when they have something to strive for. Perhaps your goal will be saving a certain dollar amount or starting your own business. It can also be a fun goal like taking a European vacation.
The point is, you need to have a destination otherwise your journey through life will feel stagnant. Every time you achieve a goal, set another one. Keep moving forward, and you will feel much more fulfilled in your life.
Don’t Take it So Personally
I hate to break it to you, but the whole world doesn’t revolve around you. In fact, your own circle of acquaintances doesn’t even revolve around you. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that every offhand comment, every social media status update, or every single decision made by your friends, family, and coworkers is somehow about you. Nine times out of 10, it isn’t.
You aren’t the center of everyone’s thoughts. People aren’t always talking about you. Quit taking everything so personally, and you will find that your life instantly improves. On the flip side, even when they are talking about you, don’t take that personally either. Remember, the only thing that you can control in your life is yourself. You have zero control of what other people do, say, or think. However, you can control how you respond to those things. Take criticism and advice with a grain of salt.
Exercise Every Day
Everything about your life will improve with a daily exercise habit. You will be healthier overall. Plus, you will find that you have better mental clarity, your stress is reduced, and you will even see improvements in your sex life. Plus, people that exercise daily tend to live longer which means you will have more time to enjoy this amazing life you are building for yourself.
If you are starting at zero, you don’t want to jump straight into a hardcore training session because you will likely hurt yourself and won’t want to stick with it. Go slow. Start by talking daily walks or doing some beginner yoga. Then as you get more accustomed to the exercise you can add more challenging activities. This one is definitely a journey, not a destination-type goal (something I suggest is using the Cross Rope Weighted Jump Rope for your exercise - it's a fun way to get fit! I'm currently on day 72!).
Get Rid of Distractions
Take stock of your day to day life. How much of it are you spending on mindless, pointless pursuits that aren’t moving you forward and aren’t even that enjoyable? Social media is probably the biggest culprit of sucking away your precious minutes. You probably spend several hours each day just scrolling through your various social media platforms, but there is no purpose to it.
There are likely other areas of your life where you are just frittering away time instead of actually doing something. This doesn’t mean that you can’t do things for pleasure, not at all. However, are you really getting that much pleasure from scrolling through Instagram? Wouldn’t it be better to save up all those wasted minutes to watch a movie in the evening or go for a hike? Add up how much time in your week is wasted on silly things, and then imagine the ways you could put that time to better use.
It’s Your Life
This is your one and only life, folks. Wouldn’t you rather live it on your terms? Don’t you want to go to sleep each night feeling like you really “lived” that day? Follow these tips, you will find that your life is happier, healthier, and more complete.
